Tyler Losco
I am currently pursuing my Master of Health Science (MHS) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Catawba College. Originally from Jacksonville, FL, I obtained my Bachelor of Music Education from Florida State University and became a high school band director. After doing this exciting yet work for 4 years, I eventually moved to North Carolina and became a professional Firefighter for the city of Winston Salem. I have continued to serve in this role while completing my master’s degree. As part of these experiences, I have witnessed the impact that mental health challenges can have on people from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Additionally, I have struggled with my own mental health concerns and have personally experienced the value of therapy. I am a dedicated husband and father, and in my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, watching movies and TV shows (comedies are my favorite!), listening to music, and being outdoors.
Many of life’s frustrations and disappointments stem from our own beliefs and expectations. Understanding the connection between our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors is the foundation of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is one of the therapeutic approaches that I’m drawn to. Many CBT interventions are evidence-based and are simple to apply as part of our everyday lives. I also appreciate the principles of person-centered therapy, existential therapy, reality therapy, and many of the mindfulness-based practices. I believe that each person is unique, and therapy should be based on the individual needs of the client. My goal is to gain a thorough understanding of my client’s life situation and work collaboratively with them to develop a customized plan.
My clinical interests include working with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, emotional regulation difficulties, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, I would be happy to address any concern the client may bring to the counseling session. I look forward to hearing the stories of my clients, being there to support them, and helping them to achieve and maintain their version of wellness.
